love n.
I’m not even going to try”

On Valentine’s Day, I finished The Lover’s Dictionary by Daniel Levithan. It’s a modern love story, told through a series of dictionary-style entries. We are introduced to this couple who met through a dating site, one of them dhy while the other is quite the opposite. We never learn their names, but their story is unfolded through the short entries and we learn the ups and down through the course of their relationship in a non-chronological way.

“You can lie to yourself if you want, but reality is going to catch up with you. I’ll be waiting when it does… whether you like it or not.”

After a horrible period of reading slump, I’m finally back on the wagon and updating this beloved blog again. The first book since the reading slump, as well as the first book of 2015, is The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger, written by her at the young age of only 18! The book tells the story from Bianca Piper’s POV, a 17 years old girl who is way too smart and intelligent to fall for the usual cliché crap that most teenage girls do. She hates going out and party, doesn’t believe in young love or even being in love during high school, and sure as hell doesn’t fall for the charms of the -ehem- man-whore Wesley Rush. She hates his guts.

But when things go from bad to worse at home, Bianca finds herself in search for an instant distractions and ends up kissing Wesley… and actually likes it. She ends up having a no-strings-attached kind of relationship with him and this leads to so much more than she thought it would.

“Always do what you’re afraid to do.”

When I picked up this book, I had no expectation. Okay maybe I thought this was going to be relatively good since it’s been so popular among the booktube community. But I didn’t really know what it was about, whether it was a tragic cutesy book (judged by the cover), or a crime solving book. So I picked it up, and I read. And read, and read, and read. And when I finished, I was splattered everywhere. This book, this book, I don’t know what to do with it now.

The story mostly takes place on Beechwood Island, owned by Cadance Sinclair Eastman’s grandfather, Harris Sinclair, set in Cape Cod. Every summer, the whole “Sinclair Family” goes there and spends their summer swimming in the beach, playing tennis tournaments and eat delicious food cooked by the staff. They are the Sinclairs, no one is a criminal, no one is an addict, no one is a failure. No one is needy, no one is wrong. But they are beautiful, privileged, damaged and liars.

“The most basic sort of love: to be worried about the one who was worrying about you.”

I always say that turning 18 isn’t making anything different. But I’m wrong. Especially in the reading front. Okay, so reading about younger characters makes me want to slap them when they’re acting their age; maybe I changed a bit. Seriously though, I really didn’t think it would be such difference, but I changed. And I noticed that while I read this book. I cringed wrinkled my nose at some of the parts. As I always, I do wish the best for the characters, as in, that they will stay together. Forever. But well, I guess I’m quite hypocrite.

This story is about Owen and Lucy, two young adults who meet during a blackout in the city that never sleeps. Through this encounter, they get to know each other until they are pulled apart to two different continents. They stay in touch, but it isn’t easy with distance and time difference.

“Before someone else can break your heart? Isn’t it better to break it yourself?”

After anticipating this book ever since I finished Lola and the Boy Next Door, I was absolutely thrilled when it finally came out. Sadly, I was in the middle of City of Heavenly Fire when it came out, so I had to finish that first, before I could pick up Isla and the Happily Ever After. The week after the book came out, my senior year in high school started again, so I had less time for books. But I finished CoHF. So finally, after much anticipation, I opened the glorious book, that was going to be the last installment in the Anna and the French Kiss serie. It’s the end. The Final.
Isla is spending her summer in Manhattan before going back to Paris for her senior year at SOAP; School of America in Paris. But before summer ends, she meets Josh, the crush she has had since freshman year. They strike a conversation but never see eachother again until school starts. Then amazingly enough, they end up together. But that doesn’t mean that she has gotten her happily ever after just yet.

“You should be with someone who could make you happy, really happy, dancing on air happy.”

Some time ago, I saw the teaser for the upcoming film “Love, Rosie”, based on Cecelia Ahern’s book with the same name (US edition, originally titled “Where Rainbows End” in the UK). Being the book nerd that I am, I had to pick up the book and read it before the film hits the theaters. The book takes you through Rosie Dunne and Alex Stewart’s life, starting from the age of 7, until the old ages of 50. I must admit, I did not see that coming. Neither had I ever read a book where it’s time span was that long. Anyways, Rosie and Alex are a couple of best friends who (of course) has the feelings for each other. However, because of a long and torturing course of misfortune, they seem to never get the chance to fully admit it to each other.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do/With your one wild and precious life?”

One day, I was strolling around in the local bookstore when the cover of Severed Heads, Broken Hearts caught my eye. I picked up the book and read the back and immediately wanted to read it. After a while, I finally did. The book revolves around Ezra Faulkner, the so-called “Golden Boy” with the perfect life. He is a popular jock and prom king, as well as dating the school’s popular girl. However, Ezra believes that everyone has a tragedy waiting for them, if they haven’t already been strucken by it. So it doesn’t really come as a shock when his tragedy knocks him out. After a hideous accident, which left his knee shattered, along with his social life and tennis career.

“We accept the love we think we deserve.”

I’ve been wanting to watch The Perks of Being a Wallflower for a while now, but promised myself not to do so until I’ve read the book. And I did. The book is from Charlie’s point of view. It’s written in a letter format, where Charlie writes to an anonymous reciever about his problems and thoughts about starting high school; how he handles the impact his favorite aunt’s death gave him, losing a dear friend and meeting new ones.

“Look at him. Whole life turned upside down, and he’s in there making pizza rolls.”

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve seen this cover everywhere. On the internet, that is. Again, the cover pulled me towards it, and I decided, “Fine. I’ll read this book sometime soon”. So after Eleanor & Park, I picked up the book and start reading it. Rebel Belle revolves around Southern belle, Harper Price. Harper is shown to be the perfect girl who is good at everything she does. She is SGA president, head cheerleader, homecoming queen and easily a top student. This is soon flipped upside down when she suddenly gets superpowers literally blown into her, forcing her to fulfill a destiny she’s unsure she wants, setting her relationships with her boyfriend and close friends in at risk.

Eleanor was right. She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.

As promised, I jumped right into Eleanor & Park after I finished writing the review for Fangirl. The book recently got released here in Norway, so I thought why not? The book is often praised as the new Romeo & Juliet, which I must say, made me quite interested. Eleanor & Park is about, well the title says it all, Eleanor and Park, who first meet each other in August 1986, on a school bus. Park is a half Korean and half Irish-American boy, who loves comic books and music. Eleanor is the new girl who suddenly shows up and gets bullied by mostly the whole school. Park is the one to offer a seat next to his on the bus on her first day, and this is what leads to the lovely story between these two, dare I say it, star-crossed lovers.
